In a budget letter to the community dated February 10, 2009, the Ross Valley School District announced that it would begin issuing pink slips to teachers at the end of the month. The timing and process is required by law. In summary:
:: March 15 — deadline for notifying certificated employees (teachers and administrators) if they might potentially lost their jobs.
:: May 15 — deadline to issue final notifications to those who will actually be laid off. This could be less than the number of notices issued on March 15, depending on budget decisions.
The district is working from a seniority list to determine who to notify. The process takes into consideration the credentialing needs of the district, as well as the credentials held by the staff. The district is working with the unions to ensure that the list and procedures are agreed upon.
It may be that more notices will be provided on March 15 then on May 15. The actual number of layoffs depends on the final school district budget which, in turn, depends on the final State of California budget.
The notices do not preclude the district from hiring teachers and administrators back if the financial picture changes or if other savings opportunities are identified.
The district anticipates that pink slip notices will also go to classified employees — all other employees that work for the district such as library specialists. The notification requirements are different than for classified employees; the district must send these notices at least 45 days prior to layoff dates.
